News & Analysis Fight OppressionBiden Says: “Build That Wall!”The Biden administration recently waived a series of federal laws that would have stymied the construction of a border wall in Starr County, Texas. Apparently, the use of executive power is only an overreach of power when it is used to forgive student debt or codify Roe v. Wade—but not when it is used to deny railroad workers the right to strike or to prevent refugees and migrants from seeking a better life.Among the laws waived by the administration were the Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. The waiving of these regulations will allow the government to fast-track the building of a border wall within a designated wildlife refuge that is home to many protected species, including ocelots.Biden waived a series of federal laws that would have stymied the construction of a border wall in Starr County, Texas. / Image: The White House, Wikimedia CommonsThe liberal media seems especially concerned about how this will impact the poor felines. Now, we sincerely wish the best to the ocelots, but our concern here is the inhumane and reactionary attitudes of both Democrats and Republicans when dealing with human immigrants. Just a few weeks ago, NYC Democratic Mayor Eric Adams said that migrants would “destroy the city.”The fact that Biden has now used his executive power to expand the construction of Trump’s wall blatantly shows that the Democrats only care about migrants when they can be conveniently used as a political wedge. When push comes to shove, they uphold and support the same reactionary positions as the Republicans. These workers are only trying to enter the US because their countries have been ravaged by US imperialism. If their countries had not been so savagely pillaged, if people could afford a good standard of living for their families, they would not need to make the dangerous trek to seek better lives. And the voyage is extremely dangerous. Not only do migrants have to trudge through deserts and jungles, swim through swamps and rivers, and risk being ransomed or caught in the crossfire of competing narcotrafficking gangs, they also have to face racist border agents and paramilitaries, attack dogs, and could well be caught and die of heatstroke in one of ICE’s deportation camps. To top it all off, if they reach the Rio Grande, they now face an array of sinking buoys that have already drowned four people. At least they can rest assured knowing that it is a “progressive” Democratic president presiding over their hardship and death.Just a few weeks ago, NYC Democratic Mayor Eric Adams said that migrants would “destroy the city.” / Image: Marc A. Hermann, MTAThe only way to end the misery and violence that this economic system brings about is to overthrow it. The cronies in Washington and Wall Street would have nothing if they didn’t exploit workers both at home and abroad. The ruling class is terrified of the tremendous power of the working class, and will do anything to pacify them, trick them, and pit them against each other. This is why they conveniently use immigrant workers as scapegoats to “divide and rule” the US working class. But the ruling class cannot stop the tide of history. American workers can and will learn through their own experience that it is not their immigrant brothers and sisters, or any other section of the working class, who are to blame for inflation, low wages, or unaffordable housing—the capitalists are.Capitalism is a system based on artificial scarcity, where a minority of parasitic billionaires profit from the hard labor of the majority of oppressed and exploited. When the working-class majority rises up, united across any nationality, ethnicity, and gender—then no force on earth can stop us from taking what’s ours, and using all the wealth created by us to provide a dignified life for everyone. While Biden and Trump say: “Build that wall,” communists say: “Down with the border and capitalism!”Share This November 14, 2023
