Tulsa 1921 and Jim Crow CapitalismIn 1921, thousands of white vigilantes destroyed the black Greenwood section of Tulsa, Oklahoma and massacred hundreds of black people. The violence in Tulsa bookended decades of American history and racism, from Birth of the Nation to the Red Summer and the second coming of the KKK. It also heralded renewed black militancy against racism, and foretold the rise of mass black struggle that in parts adopted an explicitly revolutionary and even communist orientation.
