October 2014 Fighting Fund Appeal

The defenders of capitalism will concede that there is a boom-slump “business cycle,” but they assert that whatever unemployment and wage cuts result from a downturn, will be made up for in the upswing, thus leading to “a rising tide that lifts all boats.”

We explain that the above was more or less true in the wealthy capitalist countries during a period like the post-World War II boom, but this is no longer the case. After the 2008 “Great Recession,” the percentage of people over the age of 16 that have a job today is basically the same as at the end of the recession: 59%. The NY Times reported on September 17, 2014 that median household income is now 8% lower than 2007, adjusted for inflation.

The poverty rate is 14.5%, which is two percentage points higher than 2007 and 3.4 percentage points higher than it was in the early 1970s. Even with the so-called “Obama Care” health care program, 41 million people are without coverage. How is that for an economic upswing! But people are fighting back! The fast food workers had a day of action. A huge climate march of more than 300,000 people took place in NYC on September 21. The WIL/IMT is very busy this fall with interventions at these events and our campus work—building Marxist student clubs. A new club was just established in the Twin Cities at the University of Minnesota. A meeting of over 50 people on the racist murder in Ferguson was held at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

We also had a successful Midwest Marxist School in St. Louis on the weekend of September 20 and 21, and plan similar schools in California and NYC for October and November. We are slowly but surely growing the forces of Marxism, and we thank you for your help.

Comrades in Pittsburgh raised their monthly contributions to Socialist Appeal. Sam, a healthcare worker in NYC, is doing the same. Zach, a janitor in Minnesota did the same. A reader of our website from Maine bought $30 worth of booklets and sent a contribution for $30, and said more was on the way. Others have subscribed Socialist Appeal at the solidarity price and made contributions. One person at the climate march bought a copy of Socialist Appeal for $20. On top of this, our special fundraising appeal launched in May, which set a target of $12,000 has brought in over $13,000 so far. More than $3,000 has been pledged in addition to this amount!

Readers of this magazine will know that comrade Riaz Lund in Pakistan was recently the target of an assassination attempt. His sacrifice is the ultimate one—putting his life on the line. We know the financial sacrifices we ask are difficult but this is work is serious and the struggle ahead will not always be easy.

Let’s get to our goal of raising $21,000 by the end of 2014. We are already 90% of the way there! You can make this happen. You can help build the forces of Marxism and ensure the working class its future victory. Forward to socialism!
