In a City of Billionaires and Vacant Homes, Democrats Attack Immigrants

As the so-called “migrant crisis” escalates in New York City, Democratic mayor Eric Adams continued his disgusting attacks on immigrants during a recent town hall:

This issue will destroy New York City … All of us are going to be impacted by this. I said it last year when we had 15,000, and I’m telling you now at 110,000. The city we knew, we’re about to lose.

But wait, Mr. Mayor: there is plenty of housing in NYC for these asylum seekers! The New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development estimates that there are at least 90,000 vacant apartments in the five boroughs! NYC houses more billionaires than any city on Earth, and this so-called crisis could be solved almost overnight by expropriating the speculators and taking over their vacant apartments to house the immigrants and all of the homeless population.

Instead, the capitalists and their political representatives protect private property while further repressing the working class. This can be seen in the massive NYPD budget—over $5.8 billion—which is more than the GDP of countries like Liberia! Meanwhile, Adams is cutting social services and pandering to Wall Street.

This is yet another example of the Democrats pretending to be “worker friendly” in words while selling out the working class in practice. Just as Obama deported more immigrants than Trump, and Biden has brought back the de facto asylum ban. It is important to remember that the asylum seekers come primarily from countries in Latin America and West Africa that have been ravaged by imperialism, forced by violence, hunger, and mass unemployment to seek a better future for themselves and their children. Class-conscious workers should reject the “us versus them” narrative and embrace the idea that an injury to one is an injury to all, no matter where someone was born or where they live!

The IMT fights to end the parasitic capitalist housing market, which should be nationalized to provide quality housing for the entire working class, regardless of nationality, with rent capped at 10% of income. We fight to abolish all borders and to grant immediate and unconditional asylum and equal rights to all undocumented immigrants! Only a mass communist party can fight the capitalist class and establish such a revolutionary program! If you’re looking to end the oppression of all immigrants, then join us and get organized to overthrow this parasitic system!
